Zoku's Music Portfolio *Persona 4, Your Affection Bass Cover Update*
« on: May 29, 2008, 06:59:22 PM »

UPDATE
Okay so I've been playing a ton of Persona 4 lately, again. Your Affection has always been one of my favorite songs on the OST and in the game, so I resolved myself to learn the bass part for it. As such, I'm postin' it up for all of you to hear, and hopefully enjoy. It was a bit tough to learn at first, but I got the hang of it I think. Anyways feedback is welcome and appreciated! All I really did was turn the bass in the song itself down, and played over it so you can hear my playing instead..so yea! Enjoy!

Hmm, it's interesting. I don't think it's really my genre, but good nontheless. Perhaps a little more percussion in the next one?

BTW, just a suggustion, use MediaFire next time to host the file. I think it's a lot better then RapidShare

Ooh, very nice Zoku.  I've been looking forward to listening to your work ever since you mentioned it way back, I love both the melody and bass line, in fact it's now stuck in my head. Cheesy I think this would have been better placed in the Original Creations board, as thats where you'll receive the majority of feedback from both artists like myself and the general populace.

If I had any criticism it would be that the bass seems a little overpowering in some areas, although in some cases it's good to have both parts fighting over the dominant position, in a gentle piece like this it's usually best to strike the right balance.  Other than that, I really enjoyed it, very well done. I was kind of worried about the bass in this song.  I think if I can I might get Andim or someone to maybe move this thread over there if it's a better idea.  Aside from that I think you're right about the overpowering.  This song wasn't meant to be too difficult, as is the other one I'm working on, I just want to take a break from my other complicated stuff and write something gentle, simple, and melodic.  So I'm trying hard Cheesy  Aside from that I think in the new one I'm messing with I'll put some percussion into it as well.  Hopefully it will make it sound a little better.

This is another song.  The rhythm guitar is by a friend of mine, he does a little singing near the end, I hope you like that.  I do the lead guitar, and I'm free styling it or whatever you want to call it.  So...in other words he knows what he's playing and I'm just playing a random solo/melody for 3:33.  I hope you all like this.  It was done in one take, the two of us playing together, and there's one point I hit the wrong string, and kind of lose myself.  You'll know what I'm talking about, nothing too major.  Before I start to ramble.  Enjoy the song!

I really like the chord progression you used there. I don't know why, but it has a nice feel. Your improvised lead isn't bad, but it could use some work. So could mine though, so it's not a big deal. You were definitely always in key, which is a big plus, and you came up with some melody lines instead of just running scales all the time, which is also nice to hear. The only recommendation I can make is to try to make your notes up past the 15th fret sound a little less forced (if that doesn't work, maybe bend up to them), and make your phrases a little smoother. Like when you start a lick, you don't have to separate each note, for that style you could try and let them flow into each other, maybe with some pull-offs or slides.

I'm getting pretty technical now, so I'll leave it at that, but it's definitely sounding good. I look forward to hearing later recordings.

Update:  I'm going to start posting some of my earlier melodic work as well.  This song is mostly all improv. so tell me what you think of that.  Also it's completely bass so don't critique lack of guitar or drums, the song wasn't originally intended to have them.  I was working on some guitar for it, but if anyone feels the need to put some to it, let me know.

I like what you've done here for the most part. I especially like that thing you did near the middle with the major thirds. It just seems a little empty without a guitar or something playing over it in some parts, mostly when it starts to repeat stuff. I might record something for this if I have time.

That'd be great if you feel compelled to write anything,  I was working on some simple guitar to go with it but that hasn't progressed in a little while.

Yeah, it's a little long, but I'll see what I can do. Now I know what Flibster must feel like working on my song. I should go thank him again.

Flibster, if you see this, I am forever in your debt.

About the length ^^;  A lot of my interests and inspiration come out of classic rock, progressive rock, and melodic music.  So if length is ever a problem I can try writing something shorter XD

You always forgot to place the extention on your files Tongue

Well now, I think I need to say something here. I'm not a musician so do not expect a technical comment from me Tongue

All I can do here is just say some words as a music listener only, al lot of critycs aren't musicians Tongue
First I've got to say, I like those songs, they're definitley not a masterpiece, but they're somehow special, because u composted those.
It doens't really matter if u're the most skilled bass player, it's just a way to express yourself and your feelings, keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to hear something more from ya. Your not bad at all boy!!

Oh I forgot to say, is that you singing in the first song "for Midna" if that so, where's the voice man?
Your singing there u're not whispering something during night, u're singing men!!! let your voice being heard, you have to show everytime your potentials, just like you're in a crouded noisy room and u have to attract attention on you. Tongue

Well... still time to improving

No, no, no, length is not a problem. If your song is supposed to be that long, it's supposed to be that long. Don't go changing stuff around unless you feel it could be m improved, not because somebody else complains about it. I mean, take criticism into account, it's how you learn, but if you feel like writing a long song, go ahead and do it.

Well...I do really enjoy writing long pieces.  They give a lot of time to make a song not only really unique and special, but it gives me a chance to explore my creativity and express my feelings in something that I hope will be a good song that's easy on the ears.  The two other songs I wrote that I've posted up are much shorter, but that's alright.  I don't mind writing short music so much, it's good to have a balance of short and long songs I think.

Note: This is not an original creation!!!

This is me playing tribute to the song Circumstances by Rush.  I chose not to sing because I was sick the other day and my voice is still a little raspy.  I wanted to get some of my skill out there instead of my original work, because I've practiced these songs much more.  I was going to play La Villa Strangiato and Natural Science for you all, but my hand kept on cramping up and so I decided to play this.  I hope you enjoy this song, Circumstances by Rush.

Edit: Also not Original Work!!!

I decided since I can play guitar I'd show a little of that too.  This is me, playing a combination Fly by Night/In the Mood by Rush.  There are mistakes, particularly in Fly by Night, because I haven't nailed the solo yet (its actually pretty hard).  In any case, I hope you enjoy this one too.  This is Fly by Night/In the Mood by Rush.

Heh, i've been having issues with my soundcard recently, but this more than gave me the incentive to fix it, thank you for sharing this with us mate. ^^

Regardless of what other people say, i'm a big fan of certain tributes and covers so long as they stay faithful to the original and not attempt to alter the structure or style in any way, like what Ashley Tisdale did with Rick Astley *shudders*.

But anyway, I loved it Zoku.  I have yet to hear that song, but from what I could tell you were spot on with the backing, obviously CS would be able to go into further detail as i'm no expert on bass unfortunately other than it's history in popular music, but it was really nice to listen to and I could tell you put a lot of passion into that, as you do with all of your work.  I should really check out some more Rush methinks, because this is exactly my kind of music (outside of my other strange genres) XD.

I look forward to hearing more Zoku, keep up the excellent work.. don't worry about doing covers, i'm more than happy to listen to anything and as I said they don't bother me at all. Smiley
